10 practical ways to save money on a salary in Pakistan

Updated 10 October 2026

Quick answer: Save on salary day, before you spend; give the categories that leak a monthly limit; and write every expense down for one month so you can see where the money actually goes. A committee or an automatic transfer turns saving into a habit.

Start by knowing where it goes

Most people underestimate small daily spending: chai, snacks, rides, mobile top-ups. Write down every rupee for one month before you cut anything. The list usually shows two or three categories that you did not expect.

Ten habits that work

  1. Pay yourself first. On salary day, move your saving to a separate account or a committee before anything else.
  2. Join a committee (BC) if you need discipline. A fixed monthly instalment saves even in busy months.
  3. Give each leaking category a limit: eating out, online shopping, rides. “Rs 6,000 for eating out” is easier to keep than “spend less”.
  4. Buy rashan once a month with a list, and top up weekly only for fresh items.
  5. Watch the bijli bill. Check the units on each bill, and run heavy appliances outside peak hours if you are on a peak-time tariff.
  6. Cancel subscriptions and packages you no longer use. Check your mobile and app subscriptions every three months.
  7. Wait 48 hours before any non-essential purchase over Rs 5,000.
  8. Plan for big yearly costs: school admissions, Eid, weddings. Divide by twelve and set that aside each month.
  9. Keep an emergency fund. Aim for at least one month of expenses, then three.
  10. Review the month every month. Ten minutes at month end shows what worked and what did not.

Do it in Tijaorii

  1. Add your salary as Income and set it to repeat every month.
  2. Add your committee instalment or saving as an expense in the Committee category, repeating monthly.
  3. Open your book’s settings, then Monthly budget, and set limits for the categories that leak.
  4. Add every expense the moment you pay, by keypad or by voice (“rickshaw 300”).
  5. At month end, check the summary: what is left, the biggest categories, and the change from last month.

Questions

How much of my salary should I save?

A common rule is 10 to 20%. If that is not possible yet, start smaller and make it automatic. A regular committee instalment counts as saving.

Is a committee a good way to save?

For many people, yes: the fixed instalment builds the habit. Remember the payout is your own money coming back, so plan it like savings, not a bonus.

What if my income changes every month?

Budget on your lowest normal month and save whatever comes above it.

Is Tijaorii free?

Yes. No ads and no paid tier. It is on the App Store now, and Android is coming soon.
